Description

There are few institutions in the UK with an unbroken three centuries of service and none of them is so close to the heart of the nation as "The Men in Scarlet", the Chelsea Pensioners, and their home, the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Founded in 1682 by King Charles II and intended for the 'succour and relief of veterans broken by age and war', the Royal Hospital, with its Grade 1 listed buildings, still serves its original purpose and intends to continue to further its role well into the 21st Century.

Our 1½ hour tour, conducted by a Chelsea Pensioner, will include the Great Hall, Chapel, Light Horse Courts, Museum and Shop. Cost £8 (includes a donation of £5 towards the work of the Hospital), maximum 20 people. Contact Patricia Neville (tel 020 7224 0365, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Description

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1692 the Royal Hospital has changed little in its long history. From its distinctive red brick exterior to its beautifully designed interiors the Royal Hospital remains a remarkable and historical building.
