The Course was established in 1994 with the aim of providing programmes of study linking the Visual Arts to their historical and cultural backgrounds.
Each of our carefully constructed courses is designed to take an innovative approach to the arts enabling those with prior knowledge to gain fresh insights while offering the beginner something more substantial and informative than a standard history of styles. Our lectures are carefully constructed to be logical and coherent with room for debate and discussion. Information is up-to-date and high quality visual mate¬rials are used.
We believe learning should be an enjoyable and exciting experience as well as the chance to socialise and ex¬change ideas with like-minded fellow stu¬dents. The Course attracts participants from a wide range of countries and backgrounds; some have degrees in the History of Art, some have taken courses elsewhere and some are "absolute beginners".
In 1995, The Course launched its travel arm with a study tour to Japan. Since then, visits have been made in Eu¬rope, America, China, Egypt, In¬dia, and recently to Turkey. In 2011, we will introduce South America. Many of those travelling are students attending our teaching pro¬grammes but family, partners and friends are welcome and the tours are made as friendly as possible. They are led by tutors who know and love the destinations and can offer far more than the standard tourist experience. Whilst the tours are ar¬ranged by The Course, they are facilitated through bonded agents so that participants have the security offered by a large company while enjoying the flexibility of an inde¬pendent organisation.
The Central Club, a grade II listed building, at 44 Portland Place, London W1 is our home. The Adams brothers planned Portland Place in 1774 and their scheme was subsequently incorporated into Nash's Grand Route from Carlton House to Regent's Park. No. 44, one of the original houses, retains many of the decorative features associated with its de¬signers Robert and James Adam. Sensi¬tively modernised, The Club has its own coffee shop and lift access to all floors. Situated in Marylebone with its many art galleries, The Wallace Collection and Wigmore Hall, it enables us to take advantage of the many cultural activities in the area.
Lectures are held between 10.45 and 12.45.
Free Choice Ticket
All the programmes can be booked by the year, the term or just a day at a time. THE COURSE also has a scheme for those who wish to plan their own programmes of study. The FREE CHOICE ticket enables the student to select an individual session or series of lec¬tures chosen from any of programmes.
