Social & Cultural Report 2009/10

E-mail Print PDF
In the past year the Social Committee have arranged a variety of events to suit every taste. We are delighted that these events are proving to be so popular and we are generally over-subscribed. Our coffee mornings go from strength to strength attracting increasing numbers of new faces who find these events an ideal way to meet local residents. Our thanks to the Wallace Collection, Canteen, and the Arch sheila-greenHotel for providing excellent coffee and goodies at very reasonable cost, and to Vivien Marshall who kindly hosted a coffee morning at her home. We also enjoyed a scrumptious afternoon tea at the Mandeville Hotel.

Our evening events included a dinner at Garbo's restaurant, Christmas cocktails and canapés at The Arch Hotel, a very well-attended New Year party at Ishtar, and dinner with matching wines at Galvin Bistrot. A highlight in December was the Interfaith Service which was hosted at One Marylebone by the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple. It was a splendid venue for a fascinating evening of music and prayer, followed by delicious vegetarian food and drinks.

The Scrabble Club gets together on the third Tuesday of each month at Canteen on Baker Street.   There are two sessions, the first starting around 5pm, the second around 6.30 - however, all members are free to come and go/play as Scrabblethey please.  Scrabble sets and dictionaries are provided.

While there is plenty of space it would be helpful if new members could phone me on 020 7916 9353 or 0788 789 1977 or email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to get an idea of numbers of participants.   There is no charge but players are encouraged to sample Canteen's excellent range of tea/coffees or something a bit stronger perhaps!

For further details go to the Scrabble Club on our Events page

Marylebone Association Book Club

The Marylebone Association Book Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month to bookclubdiscuss a previously selected book which members have read during the preceding month. See Marlylebone Assoiciation Events page for details of the next meeting
The following titles will give you an idea of what we read:

  • Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day - Winifred Watson
  • My Cousin Rachel - Daphne du Maurier
  • Georgiana - Duchess of Devonshire - Amanda Foreman
  • The Kite Runner - Khalid Hosseini
  • The Silver River - Daisy Goodwin
  • The Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls
  • Dreams from my Father - Barack Obama

We meet in member's homes, sometimes with the added incentive of a glass of wine to lubricate the discussion! - with a maximum attendance between 10 and 12 people. When we are over subscribed we have found that discussion continues at some of the Marylebone Association coffee mornings so you won't miss out on sharing opinions. The atmosphere is friendly and informal and by no means academic, so don't be put off by thinking that we are a bunch of intellectuals!
